DALMORES (1871-1939)

De son vrai nom, Henri Alphonse Boin, Charles Dalmorès est né à Nancy le 31 décembre 1871. Il fait ses études musicales tout d’abord à
Nancy et les poursuit, comme corniste au Conservatoire de Paris et, devient l’un des membres les plus appréciés de l’orchestre des Concerts
Lamoureux. C’est alors qu’il découvre qu’il a une fort belle voix de ténor. Il revient donc au Conservatoire où il apprend tous les secrets de l’art
du « bien chanter ». En 1899, c’est à Rouen qu’il fait ses débuts de chanteur, devenant le 17 février 1900 le héros de la première en France de
la version française signée Alfred Ernst de Siegfried de Wzagner. Mais c’est à Bruxelles, de 1900 à 1906 qu’il accède à la notoriété, dans des
rôles aussi divers que le Jean du Jongleur de Notre Dame, où il révèle ses dons exceptionnels de comédien, Don José, Julien de Louise, Faust,
Hoffmann,... Vient ensuite Londres, l’Opéra Royal de Covent Garden, où il chante en 1904 Faust, aux côtés de la Marguerite de Nellie Melba,
dont il sera le partenaire dans Hélène, un acte écrit pour elle par Saint Saëns, Araquil dans La Navarraise de Massent, Jean de Hérodiade. Il y
retourne en 1905 pour chanter sous la direction d’André Messager Faust, Don José, Roméo et dans L’Oracolo, lors de la première mondiale de
cet opéra en un acte de Franco Leoni. De 1909 à 1911, il y chante Faust, Julien, Don José, Samson, Pedro de La Habanera de Léo Laparra et
dans Aïda, remplaçant au pied levé Léo Slezac souffrant, il obtient en Radamès un mémorable triomphe. Entre temps, de 1906 à 1910, il se
produit au Manhattan Opera de New-York. Entre deux saisons anglaises ou américaines, il se rend à Stuttgart pour travailler le répertoire
wagnérien où il ne tarde pas à briller à Cologne, Berlin, Vienne ou Hambourg, allant même jusqu’à être invité à Bayreuth pour chanter
Lohengrin. De 1910 à 1912, il fait partie de la troupe du Philadelphia de Chicago puis de celle de l’Opéra de Chicago de 1913 à 1918. Ce très
grand ténor français ne parut à l’Opéra de Paris que dans le rôle titre de Siegfried en 1911, dans Hérode de Salomé et dans Siegfried du
Crépuscule des Dieux en 1913
Après avoir pris sa retraite, il enseigne le chant tour à tour à Paris, New-York et Los Angeles, ville où il meurt le 6 décembre 1939.

Under his real name of Henri Alphonse Boin, Charles Dalmores was born at Nancy on December 31 1871. His first musical studies were in Nancy after which he
continued his studies as a horn player at the Paris Conservatoire and became one of the most admired members of the orchestra of the Concerts Lamoureux.
However he soon discovered that he had a beautiful tenor voice. Thus he returned to the Conservatoire where he learned all the secrets of the art of "good singing2.
In 1899 he made his debut as a singer at Rouen and on February 17th 1900 he sang the title role in the premiere of the French version by alfred ernst of Wagner's
Siegfried. But it was in Brussels between 1900 and 1906 that he achieved fame in roles as varied as Jean in Le Jongleur de Notre Dame, in which he revealed
exceptional gifts as a actor, Don Jose, Julien in Louise, Faust, Hoffmann,... After this he went to London, to the roysal Opera, Covent Garden, where he sang Faust
in 1904 to the Marguerite of Nellie Melba, whom he also partnered in Helene written specially for her by Saint-Saens, Araquil in Massenet's La Navaraisse and Jean
in Herodiade. He returned ther in 1905 to sing under the baton of Andre Messager Faust, don Jose, Romeo and in the world premiere of the one act opera by Franco
Leoni, L'Oracolo. Between 1909 abd 1911 he sang Faust, Julien, don Jose, Samson and Pedro in Leo Laparra's La Habanera at covent Garden. Replacing Leo
Slezak at short norice he gained a memorable triumph as Radames. Between 1906 and 1910 he also appeared at the Manhatten Opera in New York. Between two
season either english or American, He took himself to Stuttgart to work on the Wagnerian repertoire in which he was soon appearing with success in Cologne, Berlin,
vienna and Hambourg and was even invited to sing Lohengrin at Bayreuth. Between 1910 and 1912 he was a member of the Philadelphia company of Chicago then
that of the Chicago from 1913-1918. This great French tenor
only appeared at the Paris Opera in the title role of Siegfried in 1911, then as Herod in Salome and Siegfried inGotterdammerung in 1913. After he retired from the
stage, he tought singing in Paris, New York and in Los angeles where he died on December 6th 1939.
