La basse Paul Aumonier est né à Paris le 7 juillet 1872. dans une famille à l’aise et bien pensante. Dès lors, on comprendra la réprobation à l’égard de ce rejeton qui voulait mener carrière d’histrion, sera-ce au service de la musique et du chant. Mais les dons et la volonté de l’enfant puis de l’adolescent vinrent à bout des barrières de toutes sortes. Et ce fut l’entrée au Conservatoire de Paris, puis la chance d’avoir pour professeur le célèbre baryton Léon Melchissédec. Lors du concours final où il obtient son premier prix, se trouve dans l’assistance une personnalité qui est particulièrement saisie par les résonances graves de la voix du jeune homme. Il s’agit d’un ingénieur de la firme Pathé, alors à ses tout débuts dans l’enregistrement du son.C‘est donc avant ses premiers pas sur scène, en 1897, il a 25 ans, la gravure d’un premier cylindre : l’air « Guerre aux tyrans » du Charles VI de Fromenthal Halévy. Comme la reproduction n’existait pas alors, il devait recommencer autant de fois que nécessaire. pour faire face à la demande, c’est ainsi qu’il dut chanter 500 fois Le Cor de Flégier : un record !
Paul Aumonier était une véritable « basse profonde », possédant des Fa et des Ré graves d’une puissance et d’une splendeur inégalées. Cette voix résonna sur toutes les scénes de province, mais aussi à Lausanne, à Bruxelles et même au Covent Garden de Londres où il fut Ramfis face au Radamès de Caruso. Il fut plusieurs saisons l’hôte privilégié de Nice puis dé Bordeaux et de Rouen. Son répertoire comportait tous les emplois de basse profonde : La Juive, Les Huguenots, Sigurd, La Favorite, Aïda, , mais aussi des rôles de basse chantante, Mignon, La Bohème, Philémon et Baucis, Tannhaüser, Lohengrin,…Engagé en 1914 à l’Opéra de Paris, il n’y fait ses débuts, du fait de la guerre qu’en 1919, le 18 août, dans le Vieillard Hébreu, Y chantant par la suite Giscon de Salammbô, Ramfis, Frère Laurent, Sparafucile. Après plus de trente ans de carrière, il se retira à paris où il mourut le 24 mai 1944.

The bass Paul Aumonier was born on July 7th 1872 into a wealthy and cultivated family. One can understand the disapproval of the family when one of their offspring wanted to go on stage even if it was in the service of music and singing. However the talent and determination of the child and later the adolescent overcame all obstacles. After his entry into the Paris Conservatoire Aumonier was lucky enough to be tought by the celebrated baritone Leon Melchissedic. During his final exam in which he won a first prize, there was in the audience someone who was greatly impressed by the deep resonance of the young man’s voice. This was an engineer working for the firm of Pathé, at the time still pioneering the recording of sound. Thus it was that even before his first appearances on stage in 1897, the 25 year old recorded his first cylinder; the aria “Guerre aux tyrans” from Fromethal Halevy’s opera “Charles VI! As it was not yet possible to produce multiple reproductions he had to sing the arias again for each copy. To satisfy deman he had to sing “Le Cor de Flegier” 500 times, which must be a record. Paul Aumonier was a true “basso profundo” possessing low Ds of unmatched power and splendour. This voice rang out on all the stages of the French provinces, but also at Lausanne, Brussels and even at Covent Garden in London where he sang Ramfis to the Radames of Caruso. During several seasons he was the privileged resident bass of the opera houses at Nice and later of Bordeaux and Rouen. His repertoire encompassed all the roles for the basso profundo; La Juive, Les Huguenots, Sigurd, La Favorite, Aida.. but also those of the basso cantante, Mignon, La Boheme, Philemon et Baucis, Tannhauser, Lohengrin. He was engaged by the Paris Opera in 1914 but because of the war had to wait until August 18 1919 to make his debut there as the Old Hebrew. He went on to sing Giscon in Salammbo, Ramfis, Frere Laurent and Sparafucile at the Opera. After a career of more than 30 years he retired in Paris where he died on May 24 1944.
