ANNUS MIRABILIS 1873

Existe-t-il vraiment des années prédestinées ? Dans le domaine des catastrophes, certes :
celles des épidémies, des guerres mondiales, des tremblements de terre, des raz de marée,…
La liste en serait longue de ces drames qui ont frappé notre planète et sa population. Mais ce qui est vrai du malheur peut-il l'être du bonheur ? C'est moins sûr et seul un documentaliste spécialisé dans tel ou tel domaine pourrait répondre à une telle question.
Alors, que s'est-il donc passé en cette année 1873 qui lui mérite le nom d'annus mirabilis ?
L'historien nous répondra :
9 mai, le krach boursier intervenu à Vienne plongera l'Europe (et même les Etats-Unis) dans une crise économique qui durera plus de vingt ans,
24 mai, chute d'Adolphe Thiers, remplacé à la Présidence de la République par le maréchal Patrice Mac-Mahon,
16 septembre, les derniers soldats allemands quittent les départements de la France qu'ils occupaient encore. Et ce, deux ans avant la date prévue, la France ayant payé les indemnités de guerre réclamées par l'Allemagne,
fin octobre, échec d'une tentative de restauration monarchique, orléanistes et légitimistes n'arrivant pas à trouver d'accord,notamment sur le drapeau,
courant décembre, les Français occupent Hanoï.
En fait, l'année 1873, sur le plan international, apparaît rétrospectivement comme une année plutôt calme entre les bouleversements de la guerre franco-allemande de 1870/1871, et la grande crise balkanique de 1875/1878, qui va aboutir au congrès de Berlin qui redessinera la carte de l'Europe jusqu'en 1913/1914.
En bref, 1873 ne semble guère admirable. Et pourtant, il est un domaine où elle l'est.
En 1973, un musicologue anglo-saxon ayant consulté moult gazettes et archives de théâtres, a découvert que cent ans plus tôt, plus d'une soixantaine d'artistes de renom dans le domaine du chant classique avaient vu le jour, chiffre considérable qui n'avait jamais été atteint jusque là et ne le sera plus depuis.
Tous ces chanteurs d'opéras n'ont pas laissé traces de leur voix par le truchement du disque, et parmi ceux qui l'ont fait, les dites traces ne sont pas toujours d'une qualité suffisante pour être écoutées aujourd'hui, malgré les progrès techniques accomplis en matière de réédition. Pourtant, ces trésors venant du passé représentent une masse d'informations impressionnante dans laquelle le choix est difficile, souvent arbitraire et toujours douloureux. C'est vrai pour ceux qui sont tombés dans l'oubli, mais ce l'est aussi pour des Les réalisateurs de cet album souhaitent qu'après l'avoir écouté, vous estimiez que 1873 mérite bien son nom, mais aussi vous faire partager les joies de leurs découvertes lors de leurs recherches.

P.S. Un léger suspense dans les recherches effectuées : on sait que Raoul Gunsbourg, fabuleux patron de l'Opéra de Monte Carlo pendant près de soixante ans, mais aussi génie de la publicité, déclarait à qui voulait l'entendre qu'il avait découvert Caruso en 1900, alors que le jeune napolitain poussait la chansonnette dans un bar milanais. Pure invention, bien sûr, mais, s'il le présenta pour la première fois chez lui en 1902 (dans La Bohème avec Melba), qui était donc ce Caruson , un baryton qui, selon les archives du théâtre, chanta en 1897 à Monte-Carlo Germont dans La Traviata et Enrico dans Lucia di Lammermoor, ce Caruson dont on entendit plus jamais parler depuis l'avènement de Caruso.

Are there years that are predestined by fate? In the domaine of catastophies, certainly; the years of epidemics, world wars, earthquakes amd tidal waves.. The list would be a long one of these dramas that have affected our planet and its population. But is what is true of misfortunes also true of good fortune? This is less sure and only a specialised researcher in this that area could answer this question.
So, what happened in 1873 that merited the title of "annus mirabilis"?
The historian would answer;
On May 9th, the stock market crash in vienna plunged Europe (and even the United States) into an economic crisis that would last more than twenty years May 24th, fall of Adolphe Thiers, replaced as President of the Republic by Marshal Patrice Mac-Mahon.
September 16th, the last German soldiers left the French departements that they still occupied. And two years earlier than envisaged France paid off the war indemnities calimed by germany
End of October, failure of the tentative restoration of the monarchy when the Orleanists and the Legitimists could not arrive at agreement, notably about the flag, while in December the French occupied Hanoi.
In fact, with hindsight and globally speaking, the year 1873 seems to have been a relatively calm one between the shocks of the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71 and the great balkan crisis of 1875078 that resulted in the Congres of Berlin that redrew the map of Europe until 1913/14. In short 1873 seems to have been nothing special. In 1973, the British record collector Vivian Liff (cette description "anglo-saxon" tellement aimee par
les francais, me semble tout a fait ridicule and sans aucune signification et je refuse absolument de l'utiliser!!!)having consulted many gazettes and theatre archives, has discovered that one hundred years earlier more than 60 famous singers saw the light of day, a consiserable figure that was never reached before or since. Not all of these Opera singers left traces of their voices on disc and not all the said traces are of sufficient qulity to be worth
hearing today, despite the progress made in transfer of hisoptic recordings. However, these treasure from the past represent an impressive mass of information amongst which it is difficult, often arbitrary and always painful to choose. The is true for those that have fallen into oblivion but.... (quelque chose manque ici??? The creators of this album hope that having listened to it you feel that the year 1873 deserves its reputation and that you will be able to share in the joy of their discoveries and their research.
P.s. A minor mystery amongst their researches; It is known that Raoul Gunsbourg, famed director of the Monte Carlo opera during nearly 60 years but also a genius at publicity, declared to everyone who would listen that he had dicovred Caruso in 1900, when the young Neapolitan was singing popular songs in a Milanese bar. Pure invention, of course, but, if he appeared for the first time in Monte Carlo in 1902 (in La Boheme with Melba) who was the Caruson a baritone who , according to the theatre archieves, sang Germont in La Traviata and Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor at Monte Carlo in 1897, this Caruson who was never heard of again after the debut of Caruso.
