Le 17 mars 1899, Massenet annonce que les répétitions pour Cendrillon marchent bien et que les artistes sont enchantés de leurs rôles.
Son travail était donc entièrement terminé à cette date. Mais quand l’œuvre a-t-elle été composée ? car, juste avant Cendrillon, nous trouvons Sapho (1897) et un ballet le Carillon (1898). Et en ces années 1897-1898, outre les oeuvres citées, il composa en plus 26 mélodies. En outre il se déplacait continuellement, puisqu’on le trouve à Aix-les-Bains, à la Grande-Chartreuse, à Pourville, à Dieppe, avant de se rendre en Bretagne, àNice, Milan, Venise, et surtout à Monte-Carlo, lieu prédestiné pour ses nouveaux opéras.Il faut conclure que Cendrillon a vu le jour au milieu de cette effervescence, donc avec une certaine précipitation..
A la Première , le 24 mai 1899, Massenet, de nature extra-sensible, alla se reposer à Enghien. Il n’assistait jamais aux créations de ses œuvres . Celle-ci eut un tel succès qu’elle se joua à l’Opéra-Comique, 49 fois en 1899 et 20 fois en 1900. Très rapidement, elle fut donnée à Genève, Milan et Alger ainsi qu’à Lyon. C’est une de ses plus charmantes inspirations, d’une écriture raffinée.
Le franc succès de Cendrillon ne c’est jamais démenti ; seule l’absence d’airs « populaires » lui a dénié le triomphe persistant de Manon ou de ThaÏs

The 17th march 1899, addressed to his publisher, Massenet announced that the rehearsals for Cinderella were going well and that the artists were very happy with their parts.The work was thus completelyfinished by this date. But when exactly was it composed since,just before Cinderella, we find Sapho (1897) and a ballet, Le Carillon (1898).
And when we remember that, during the years 1897-98, besides the works mentioned, he also wrote 26 mélodies, that he travelled continuously, that we find hinz at Aix-les-Bains, that he made an excursion to the Grande Chartreuse, that he was with hisfamily at Pourville, then in Dieppe, before going to Brittany and then to Monte-Carlo, - a very importantplace at the timefor new works -, Nice, Milan, Venice, Pourville again, etc... Without being able to establish a precise date, we can suppose that Cinderella was composed during this period and, probably, very quickly. At the first peiformance of Cinderella, on the 24th may 1899, Massenet, as usual, was very irritable and went to Enghien for two or three days to take treatment for his nerves.
The opera met with much success since it was performed fourty-nine times in 1899 and a further twenty in 1900 at the Opéra-Comique. Very soon, it was given in Geneva, Milan and Algiers as well as Lyons.
Cinderella marks the end of a period in the composer’s life. With the arrival of the new century, Massenet was to embark upon the last phase of his career which we could call the “Monte-Carlo period” (1900-1912).
