Charles KULLMANN

Le ténor américain d’ascendance germanique Charles Kullmann est né le 13 janvier 1903 à New Haven dans le Connecticut. A l’âge de huit ans, il se fait connaître comme soliste dans la manécanterie de sa paroisse. Il entre à la Yale University dans le but de devenir médecin mais les difficultés financières familiales l’obligent à renoncer à sa vocation. Toutefois il avait été membre du Yale Glee Club et, dans ce cadre, avait gagné un concours de chant inter universités. Il se demande alors s’il pourrait faire du chant sa carrière. Il travaille à New Haven avec un excellent professeur qui commence à faire du baryton qu’il croyait être un authentique ténor. Il obtient une bourse à la Juilliard Shool of Music où il étudie de 1924 à 1927 puis une autre bourse pour étudier à l’Université Américaine de Fontainebleau avec Thomas Salignac. En 1928, il donne son premier concert à Berlin. Après avoir enseigné le chant au Collège Smith, il part en tournée avec l’American Opera Company de Wladimir Rozing. Deux ans plus tard, il est auditionné par Otto Klemperer, qui l’engage au Théâtre Kroll de Berlin. Il y fait des débuts retentissants le 24 févrer 1931 en Pinkerton de Madame Butterfly. Sa réputation croissante lui vaut de se retrouver à l’Opéra d’Etat de Berlin où il a la chance de chanter sous la direction des plus grands chefs : Furtwängler, Erich Kleiber, Léo Blech… En 1934, il débute à l’Opéra de Vienne, au Covent Garden de Londres, puis au Festival de Salzbourg. En 1935 son Florestan de Fidélio et en 1936 son Walther des Maîtres Chanteurs, dirigés par Toscanini, font de lui une vedette à la voix «d’une fraîcheur charmante, musicale, lyrique, sans effort». En 1935, il signe un contrat avec le Metropolitan Opera de New-York. Il y débute le19 décembre 1935 dans un mémorable Faust. Il y chantera jusqu’en 1962, 33 rôles différents lors de 273 représentations à New-York et 119 en tournées. Parallèlement, de 1936 à 1954, il chante régulièrement à San Francisco. Durant toute sa carrière de chanteur d’opéras, il a toujours connu de grands succès dans le Lied, l’Oratorio, en concert et en récital. Depuis 1956, il enseigna à l’université d‘Indiana. Il meurt à New Haven le 8 février 1983.

Charles Kullmann, the American tenor of German descent, was bron on Jaunuary 13th 1903 at New Haven in Connecticut. At the age of eight, he attracted attention as a soloist in the local parish church. He enrolled at Yale University with the aim of becoming a doctor but his family’s financial problems forced him to give up his vocation. Nevertheless he had become a member of the Yale Glee Club, and in this context he won a university singing competition. He began to wonder if he could make a career by singing. At New Haven he worked with an excellent teacher who began to train him as a baritone but came to believe he was a genuine tenor. He won a scholarship to the Juillard School of music where he studied from 1924 to 1977, then another scholarship to study at the american University in Fontainebleau with Thomas Salignac. In 1928, he gave his first concert in Berlin. Having taught singing at smith College, he went on tour with the American Opera Company of Vladimir rosing. Two years later he was auditioned by Otto Klemperer, who engaged him for the Kroll Theatre in Berlin. He made a sensational debut on February 24th 1931 as Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly. His growing reputation brought him to the Berlin state opera where he had the opportunity to sing under the greatest conductors; Furtwängler, erich Kleiber, Leo Blech.. In 1934, he made his debut at the vienna Opera, at covent Garden in London and then at the Salzburg Festival. In 1935 his Florestan in “Fidelio” and in 1936 his Walther in “The Mastersingers” made him a star “with a charming, fresh voice, musical, lyrical and effortless”. In 1935 he signed a contract with the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He made his debut on December 19th 1935 in a memorable “Faust”. He sang there until 1962, 33 different roles in 273 performances in New York and 119 on tour. In parallel, between 1936 and 1954, he sang regularly in san Francisco. Throughout his career as an opera singer, he also found great success in lieder, oratorio and in concerts and recitals. From 1956 he taught at the University of Indiana. He died in New Haven on February 8th 1983
