Née de parents grecs, Elen Dosia arrive en France, sa nouvelle patrie, à l’âge de cinq ans. Elle fait ses humanités à Paris, entre en 1934 au Conservatoire pour en sortir deux ans plus tard avec les premiers prix. Aussitôt engagée à l’Opéra-Comique, elle débute le 28 novembre 1936 dans La Tosca, avec pour partenaire Giuseppe Lugo, un triomphe qui lui vaut d’être affichée dans La Bohème, Pelléas et Mélisande, La Traviata, Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Antonia), Grisélidis, Le Bon Roi Dagobert, L’Heure Espagnole,… En 1939, elle débute à l’Opéra dans La Chartreuse de Parme, puis y chante Juliette, Rozenn, Thaïs, Esclarmonde, Marguerite, Salomé et Desdémone,… De 1937 à 1940, elle assure la saison française de l’Opéra de Chicago avec André Burdino. En 1939, elle est engagée au “ Met ” mais ne s’y rendra qu’en 1947, pour trois saisons successives, y chantant Tosca, Manon et Mélisande (avec Jacques Jansen). En 1951, à Hollywood, elle tourne le film Of men of music. Très belle femme, excellente musicienne et comédienne racée, elle mit volontairement un terme à sa carrière à l’âge de quarante ans. Elle décède le 10 mai 2002.

Born to Greek parents, Elen Dosia arrived in France, her adopted country, at the age of 5. she studied humanities in Paris and entered the Conservatoire in 1934, leaving it two years later with first prizes. Quickly engaged by the Opera-Comique, she made her debut as Tosca on November 28 1936 with Giuseppe Lugo as her partner. It was a triumph that lead to her being cast in La Bohème. In 1939 she made he debut at the Palais Garnier in “La Chartreuse de Parme”
and later sang there as Juliette etc.From 1937 to 1940 she was essential to the French seasons at the Chicago Opera, along with Andre Burdino. In 1939 she was engaged by the “Met”. The war delayed her appearance there until 1947. In three successive seasons there she sang Tosca, Manon, and Melisande
(with Jacques Jansen) In 1951, in Hollywood, whe took part in the film “Men of Music”.
A very beautiful woman, an excellent musician and an accom-plished actress, she voluntarily gave up her brilliant career at the age of 40. she died on May 10 2002.

“Elen Dosia, (born Hélène Odette Zygomala, sometimes known as Ellen Dosia), was a French opera singer of Greek origin. Dosia was born in Constantinople. She became a soprano singer, and enjoyed her first major success at age 20 with the title part in TOSCA. She quickly became one of the most popular singers at Opéra Garnier and Opéra-Comique, where she performed from 1935 through 1952. She appeared often in Massenet operas, performing in MANON and THAÏS, and appearing at the 1942 Massenet Gala singing the title rôle in a tableaux of ESCLARMONDE. In 1947 Dosia débuted at the Metropolitan Opera, again playing Tosca. She retired from the stage in 1952, and then concentrated on her family life.”
