Germaine Martinelli had one of the most impressive and sumptuous French soprano voices of the twentieth century. There is a hint of the rapid vibrato found in so many French singers of the period both popular and classical, though it is never enough to disturb the sculpted beauty of her legato. The characteristic Gallic edge of her voice was tempered by a rich, dark, almost mezzo-like quality. There is no sign of strain at the top but is notable that she excels in roles such as Berlioz’s Marguerite and Massenet’s Charlotte, that are more often sung by mezzos than sopranos. Her only rival in rival in purely vocal terms was her close contemporary (born three years later) Germaine Lubin. Both singers excelled in Wagner as well as in the vocally demanding operas of Reyer, but on record at least, Martinellis comes across as the more passionate and interesting interpreter. If Martinelli was eclipsed at the time by the more famous Lubin it was probably because of the latter’s glacial beauty. Martinelli’s portly and unglamourous appearance confined her (with the single exception of a Marguerite in La Damnation de Faust) to the concert hall. It was a time when French audiences demanded from their soprano heroines, the kind of “chic” one sees in the glamourous photographs of sopranos such as Eide Norena and Fanny Heldy advertising gloves, hats and haute couture in the pages of interwar opera programmes. Germaine Martinelli was born in Paris in 1887. Among her teachers was the distinguished baritone Jean Lassalle. She made her debut in 1908 under her maiden name of Germaine Jobert, later using her marital name of Martinelli. She was twice awarded the Grand Prix du Disque but the fact that she recorded so many Italian and German arias in French limited their international circulation at the time.
Today she is appreciated by collectors not only for her superlative singing but also for her renditions of rare and interesting French repertoire.
