Si vous demandez à quelqu’un de qualifié de vous donner une liste des meilleurs ténors du siècle dernier, il vous nommera Caruso, Gigli, Schipa et Pavarotti,… et oubliera celui que, personnellement j’admire le plus parmi les ténors italiens : Gianni Raimondi.
Né le 17 avril 1923 à Bologne, après avoir fait ses humanités, il entre au conservatoire de sa ville natale où, après de sérieuses études avec de fortes personnalités telles que Saturno Melandri et Barra-Caracciolo, il et à même de débuter « in loco » dans le rôle ed’Ernesto du Don Pasquale de Donizetti. Et sa carrière connaît dès l’abord une rapide évolution. Il chante dans toute l’Italie, notamment à Florence en 1952 lors d’une reprise de l’Armida de Rosssini aux côtés de Maria Callas. En Alfredo de La Traviata, il retrouve celle-ci pour ses débuts à la Scala de Milan en 1955, dans l’inoubliable production de Luchino Visconti. En 1957, il sera Percy d’Anna Bolena de Donizetti toujours auprès de Maria Callas et dans une production de Visconti. A la Scala, il chante en 1958 lors de la reprise de Mosé in Egitto de Rossini et lors de la reprise en 1962 de Semiramide du même Rossini, mais cette-fois-ci aux côtés d’une autre diva, Joan Sutherland.

Il parait à Monte Carlo dans la Bohème avec Schwartzkopf puis Carosio, et La Traviata avec Tebaldi ;
à l’Opéra de Paris en juin 1953 dans Rigoletto, à l’Opéra de Vienne, au Covent Garden de Londres.
C’est à San Francisco en 1957 que Gianni Raimondi fait ses débuts aux Etats-Unis, suivi de Chicago, du Colon de Buenos Aires en 1959, et en 1965 au Metropolitan Opera de New-York dans La Bohème aux côtés de Mirella Freni.
Gianni Raimondi a été partout apprécié pour la beauté de sa voix et la vaillance de sa quinte aigue de même que par son intelligence et son engagement scénique. Son répertoire allait d’Arnold à Pinkerton, en passant par Arturo, Carlo, Fernando, Faust, Rodolfo, Gennaro,
Le Duc de Mantoue, …
Gianni Raimondi est mort à son domicile de Pianoro, près de Bologne le 19 octobre 2008.
Gianni Raimondi died on 19th October 2008 at his home in Pianoro near Bologna. Born on April 17th 1923 at Bologna, the great Italian tenor studied at the music academy of his native city with Melandri and Barra Caracciolo, and made his debut there in 1948 in the role of Ernesto in Don Pasquale. He sang all over Italy, notably at Flroence in 1952 in a revival of Rossini’s Armida with Maria Callas. He made his debut at the Paris Opera in 1953 in Rigoletto. His Debut at La Scala in Milan was as Alfredo in the famous Traviata production of Luchino Visconti. Gianni Raimondi also took part in another Visconti-Callas production, the revival of Donizetti’s Anna Bolena in which he took the role of Percy, in 1957.
Also at La Scala, he sang in revivals of Mosè in Egitto in 1958 and of Semiramide in 1962, both with Joan Sutherland. Much appreciated for the beauty of his voice and the security of his top register, Raimondi shone in the Romantic repertoire (Arnold etc) He appeared at the Opera in Monte Carlo, at the Palais Garnier in Paris the Vienna opera, at the Royal Opera House in London etc. My personal opinion is that he was the best tenor of his type in the second half of the twentieth century. Having once spent several hours with him I can testify to his perfect knowledge of singing technique his kindness and his great simplicity. The tenor was also a very attractive human being. He requested that the announcement of his death would be after his funeral, a beautiful example of humility. Bravo Maestro.The transalpine tenor made his debut on the American continent in San Francisco in 1957, followed by Chicago, then the mythical Teatro Colon in Buenos in 1959. He made his debut at the Met Opera in New York in 1965 with another singer making her debut, Mirella Freni. In the 1970s Raimondi extended his repertoire, adding more heroic roles and sang several operas by Verdi, notably Macbeth, I Vespri, Un Ballo in maschera.
Gianni Raimondi left few commercial recordings, the most famous of which was undoubtedly La Traviata with Renata Scotto and Ettore Bastianini (1962). He took part in a filmed version of La Boheme, singing Rodolfo beside Freni, under the baton of Herbert von Karajan.(1963)
