Sans atteindre la célébrité d’un Melchior ou même d’un Windgassen, Hans Hopf aura été le ténor de langue allemande qui aura chanté le plus souvent, le plus grand nombre de rôles et dans le plus grand nombre de théâtres. Il le devait moins à la qualité du timbre de sa voix qu’à sa faculté d’apprendre vite et bien ses rôles ainsi qu’à garder tout au long de sa carrière une allure juvénile.

Né à Nuremberg le 2 aout 1916, il fait ses études à Münich où il débute en Pinkerton au Landestheater en 1936. Par la suite, il sera en saison à Augsbourg (1939-1942) et à Oslo (1943-1944).

A la fin de la guerre, il revient à Berlin. En saison au Staatsoper (1946-1948), il se rend compte que sa voix s’est beaucoup développée et s’est recentrée et il décide d’aborder des rôles plus lourds.

Après une saison au Staatsoper de Dresde (1948-1949), il devient membre permanent de la troupe de l’Opéra de Bavière à Münich et membre invité de celle de l’Opéra de Vienne.

Peu à peu, il fait siens tous les rôles de ténors wagnériens pour lesquels il est invité tant dans toute l’Europe, y-compris Bayreuth, qu’outre Atlantique.

Outre les deux Siegfried, ses plus grands rôles furent Max du Freischütz, L’Empereur de La Femme sans Ombre et Florestan.

Hans Hopf est mort à Münich le 25 jui 1993.

Though he never attained the fame of Melchior or Windgassen, Hans Hopf, among German speaking tenors sang more often, the greatest number of roles and in the greatest number of theatres. This was due less to the quality of his voice than to his ability to learn roles quickly and well and to the fact that he retained his youthful appeal throughout a long career.

Born in Nuremburg on August 2nd 1916, he studied in Munich where he made his debut as Pinkerton in the Landestheater in 1936. Following this he appeared at Augsburg (1939-42) and Oslo (1943-44).

At the end of the war he returned to Berlin. At the Staatsoper 1946-8) he gave evidence that his voice had developed considerably and he decided to take on heavier roles.

After a season at the Dresden State Opera (1948-9), he became a permanent member of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and a guest of the Vienna Opera.

Gradually he took on all the Wagner roles in which he was invited all over Europe, including Bayreuth and on the other side of the Atlantic.
Apart from the two Siegfrieds his great roles were Max in Der Freischutz, the Emperor in Die Frau ohne Schatten and Florestan.
Hans Hopf died in Munich on une 25th 1993.
