It was on May 25th 1901 at Mauleon, in the land of the Pyrenees, so propitious for the production of big and beautiful voices, that a child was born into the humble Borthayre family, named Jean by his parents. A healthy and good natured child who at first sight did not seem destined to become one of the greatest opera singers of his time. Nothing if not the natural voice that with the passing years resounded more powerfully across the plains and mountains where he praticed the profession of shepherd. But the journey was long before this gift of God lead him to glory! It was during his military service that his voice was discovered and he was persuaded to present himself at the Paris Conservatoire where he ws however refused entry. He had the luck to be heard by Louis Azema, a famous bass from the Paris Opera-Comique. This singer with a long and brilliant career took charge of him and taught him everything. In order to survive the young man did a bit of everything including taxi driving when he regaled his clients with basque songs. these songs constituted his entire repertoire when he went on stage to back up Tino Rossi at the Casino de Paris. He began to be talked about to the point when he was engaged in 1937 to sing at the opera house in Algiers. but the war interrupted the beginning of his career. He could only take it up again in 1943 at the Capitole in Toulouse where he remained until 1946. Following this he appeared in Strasbourg, Bordeaux, Lyons, Marseilles and also in Ghent and Antwerp. The echo of his triumphs finally reached Paris. On February 22nd 1951 he made his debut at the Opera Comique as Zurga and on the 25th of the same month at the Opera as Valentin (three months before his fiftieth birthday). It was immediately to the great pleasure of the afficianados of fine singing, who appreciated his baritone voice, as beautiful as it was powerful and wide in range! Think of it! No one had heard anything like it since the period of Note or Rouard! They fought to hear his prologue in Pagliacci and if he had Tony Poncet (another Pyreneean) as partner in the role of Canio, the pitch was raised to delirium. The roles followed one another at both the Salle Favart and the Palais Garnier.; Ourrias, Dappertutto, Escamillo, Escamillo, Valentin, D’Arbel, Ankarstrom, Amonasro, the High Priest of Dagon, Rigoletto, Karnac, Wolfram... And when roles were no longer in the repertoire of the great Parisian houses, he went to sing them in the provinces or abroad. Les Huguenots (Nevers) Guillaume Tell (title role) Il Trovatore ( Count Luna) Herodiade (Herod) not to speak of the great roles forgotten in Paris such as Nitakhanta or Athanael. Radio and records captured this golden voice.
And this career that started so late, lasted another twenty years. At the age of 70 he retired from the stage to live quietly with his wife, Marie-Louise Azema, the daughter of his mentor, who was for a while a much appreciated light soprano. On April 25th 1984 Jean Borthayre died at Montmorency.
