Compositeur français né 24 juillet 1803 à Paris et mort à Paris 3 mai 1856 à Paris. Il étudie le piano avec son père puis entre au Conservatoire où il eut pour professeurs Reicha et Boieldieu, ce dernier, ainsi que Hérold, eurent ne grande influence sur sa carrière. Il a écrit 53 ouvrages pour le théâtre dont certains obtinrent de très grands succès : Le Châlet, Le Toréador, Giselle, Si jétais roi et, bien sûr Le Postillon de Longjumeau. On chante toujours avec recueillement son « Minuit, chrétiens » le soir de Noêl.

He studied piano with his father then entered the conservatoire where his professors were Reicha and Boieldieu, the second of whom along with Hérold exerted a great influence on his career. He wrote 53 stage works of which several won considerable success; le Chalet etc etc.
His Minuits Chrétiens is still sung solemnly every Christmas Eve.
Luvre
Opéra en trois actes, livret de de Leuwen et Brunswick, créé à lOpéra-Comique le 13 octobre 1836, puis très rapidement joué sur toutes les scènes de France et dEurope, puis aux Etats-Unis. Une représentation en fut donnée à Lonjumeau en 1936 à loccasion du centenaire de sa création .
Lintrigue
A Lonjumeau et à Paris, au début du XIXème siècle.
Acte 1
Cest jour de fête à Lonjumeau. Chapelou, le cocher de la malle poste, le postillon, se marie avec Madeleine, laccorte servante de lauberge. Selon la coutume, il chante un air
plein dentrain dans lequel avec un contre ré sonore il imite le son de la trompe de la malle poste. Il se trouve que le Marquis de Torcy, directeur de lOpéra, sest arrêté à lauberge pour déjeuner. Après avoir entendu cette voix exceptionnelle, il demande à Chapelou de renter dans sa troupe à condition de partir avec lui sur le champ pour Paris. Chapelou, décidé à ne pas rater sa chance demande à son ami Bijou de prévenir Madeleine des raisons du départ précipité de son mari et e lui dire quil reviendra bientôt.
Acte 2 (dix ans plus tard)
Ayant hérité dune vieille tante, Madeleine, qui se fait appeler Mme de Latour sest installée à Paris pour retrouver son mari et le punir. Celui-ci, sous le nom de Saint-Phar, est devenu premier ténor de lOpéra, tandis que son ami Bijou, sous le nom dAlcindor est devenu chef de chur.. Saint-Phar rencontre Mme de Latour, en qui il ne reconnaît pas Madeleine, séprend delle et lui propose de lépouser, ce quelle accepte avec empressement. Saint-Phar ne veut pas risquer dêtre accusé de bigamie et demande à Bijou dorganiser une fausse cérémonie. Madeleine sest méfiée et a enfermé Bijou, déguisé en faux prêtre.
Acte 3
Le Marquis de Torcy est amoureux de Mme de Latour, et furieux quelle loi ait préféré un chanteur. Il se rappelle que le dit ténor, alors quil était postillon sétait déjà marié. Pour se venger de son rival, il le fait arrêter pour bigamie par la maréchaussée. Madeleine, alias Mme de Latour demande de laccompagner. Elle révèle la vérité et tout est pardonné.
The work
Opera in three acts, libretto by De leuwen and Brunswick, created at the Opéra-Comique on October 13th 1836, then very rapidly performed on all the stages of France and Europe and later of the United States. A performance was given at Longjumeau in 1936 on the occasion of the centenary of the first performance.
The plot
Act1
Longjumeau and Paris, at the beginning of the 19th century. It is a day of celebration at Longjumeau. Chapelou, the coachman of the mail coach is getting married to Madeleine, the serving maid at the inn. Following custom, he sings a lively song in which he sings a high D in imitation of the trumpet of the mail coach.. By chance the Marquis de Torcy, the director of the Opéra has stopped at the inn to dine. After hearing this extraordinary voice, he invites Chapelou to join the company on condition that he leaves with him immediately for Paris. Determined not to lose this opportunity, Chapelou asks his friend Bijou to inform Madeleine of the reasons for the precipitate departure of her husband and to tell her that he will be back soon.
Act 2 (ten years later)
Having inherited from an aged aunt, Madeleine, calling herself Mme de Latour, installs herself Paris in order to find and punish her husband. He, under the name of Saint Phar has become the first tenor of the Opéra while his friend Bijou, under the name of Alcindor has become head of the chorus. Saint-Phar meets Mme de Latour and not recognising her as Madeleine is taken with her and proposes marriage which she accepts eagerly. Not wanting to be accused of bigamy saint Phar asks Bijou to organise a fake ceremony. Madeleine is suspicious and locks up Bijou, disguised as a priest.
Act 3
The Marquis de Torcy has fallen in love with Mme de Latour, and is furious that she has preferred a tenor. He remembers that the tenor, when he was still a postilion was already married. To avenge himself on his rival, he has him arrested for bigamy by the marshal. Madeleine, alias Mme de Latour insists on accompanying him. She reveals the truth and everyone is forgiven
