Grâce au développement du phonographe, autour de 1900, nous avons un bouquet de témoignages sur l’art du chant français à la fin du XIX°siècle. Si chaque artiste nous ayant légué des enregistrements, est caractérisé par la couleur de la voix, par le sens musical, par l’implication dans l’interprétation, une technique vocale leur est commune avec pour conséquence une projection des sons, une diction claire et une efficacité dans l’expression. Nous avons ainsi un certain nombre de créateurs d’œuvres lyriques dont il serait intéressant de s’inspirer pour maintenir aujourd’hui une tradition de bon aloi. La presque totalité des documents sont enregistrés, sur cylindre ou sur disque, avec le procédé acoustique, seule la longévité vocale de Lucien Fugère lui a permis d’atteindre l’enregistrement électrique. Il faut reconnaître que la voix de baryton était mieux adaptée au vieux procédé de gravure que des voix élevées dont certaines fréquences aiguës dépassaient les possibilités techniques des vieilles machines. On peut non seulement apprécier le grain des voix mais aussi ce fameux legato qui ne nuit en rien à la prononciation des mots et donc, à la compréhension des textes.
Le seul doute sur tous ces rares documents concerne le plus ancien de ces chanteurs, Jean-Baptiste Faure. Celui-ci, né en 1830, était septuagénaire en 1900. Sa voix pouvait être altérée, mais pas sa musicalité. Or ce que l’on perçoit sur ce cylindre non certifié, n’est guère convainquant.

French baritone school of the 19th.century

Thanks to the development of the phonograph around 1900,we have been bequeathed a wealth of evidence on the art of French singing at the century’s close.Although each artist who then recorded had a personal individual vocal timbre,musicality and verbal expression,they all shared a vocal technique of projection,clear diction and expressiveness.We thus have a roster of operatic creators which could help maintain an exemplary tradition.Almost all recorded acoustically on cylinder or disc;only Lucien Fugère with his longevity and lasting vocal powers recorded into the electrical era.

One must acknowledge that the baritone voice was better suited to the acoustic process than higher voices,some of whose frequencies went beyond the technical scope of the old machines. Here one can appreciate not only their vocal colour but also the legendary legato,which in no way impairs pronunciation or understanding of the text.



The only doubt arising from these rare early documents concerns the renowned singer-composer,Jean-Baptiste Faure who,born in 1830,was already a septuagenarian by 1900;the voice could have deteriorated but not the musicality.We do not accept the optimistic attribution expressed in earlier re-issues of this unauthenticated cylinder;we include it as a fill-up curiosity for listeners to decide for themselves.
