Born at Oran on October 22nd 1902, Louis Musy began his musical studies in his native city, notably studying singing with Boyer. Following this, he showed up in Paris at the Conservatoire where he was lucky enough to study with that great artist Vanni Marcoux. He made his debut at the Opera-Comique on October 17 1925 in the title role of Le Chemineau, role he sang 25 times in Paris and the provinces. With the sonorous voice, his ability to learn quickly, his proverbial memory and his gifts as an actor, he rapidly became a familiar performer at the Salle Favart and also on the radio. He participated in more than 40 creations and revivals amongst which were Bondeville’s “L’Ecole des maris” (Sganarelle) Alfano’s “Cyrano de Bergerac” (Casteljaloux) Darius Milhaud’s “Le Pauvre Matelot”(the friend), Alfred Bachelet’s “Scemo” (Tappato) Henri Fevrier’s “La Femme nue” (Rouchard) Gounod’s “Le Medecin malgre lui” (Sganarelle) Chabrier’s “Le Roi malgre lui” (Le Duc de Fritelli) Raoul Laparra’s “La Habanera” (Ramon) Massenet’s “Don Quichotte” (on one occasion in 1934 he sang Sancho Panca in the company of Chaliapin) Messager’s “La Basoche” (Le duc de Longueville) Messager’s “Fortunio” (M. Andre) Jacques Ibert’s “Le Roi d’Yvetot” (le Roi) and Lalo’s “Le Roi d’Ys” (Karnac). He also sang numerous repertory roles; a very humerous Bartholo, a cunning Scarpia, a moving Father in Louise and the four incarnations of evil in “Les Contes d’Hoffmann”, Alfio, Nilakhanta, Schaunard, Lescaut, Tonio, Zurga, Ourrias, Escamillo, Golaud and even Falstaff in his own production, musically hasardous despite the energy of Andre Cluytens.
Though he often sang in the provinces, he made only two brief appearances at the Paris Opera in “Rigoletto” and “Le Roi d’Ys”. His true home was the Salle Favart. After the Liberation and the brutal dismissal of Lucien Muratore, even though he himself had not hesitated to sing under the occupation, he was appointed a member of the purge committee. Such was his zeal that he was appointed assistant director of the Opera-Comique, while still continuing to sing certain roles until 1960, then stage director and professor at the Conservatoire. He died on October 19th 1981.
