Né à Paris le 22/7/1848, mort à Paris le 15/1/1935. Baryton français. Débuts en 1870 à Paris au café concert Ba-Ta-Clan. En 1874 il fut engagé au Bouffe-Parisien et en 1877 il entra à l’Opéra-Comique où il resta jusqu’en 1910. Il y chanta plus de cent rôles, dont une trentaine en création mondiale, y compris celui du Père dans Louise. Il fut également le premier interprète à Paris de Schaunard, de Boniface (Le Jongleur de Notre-Dame) et un célèbre Papageno, Figaro, et Leporello. II interpréta ce dernier rôle à Covent Garden en 1897, et continua à chanter jusqu’à l’âge de 80 ans, fêtant cet anniversaire avec une représentation de La Basoche au Touquet. Ces disques qui nous permettent avant tout de découvrir le style-irrémédiablement perdu- du chant français, où la nuance , le non-dit ont une importance primordiales. La voix? neutre, assez peu puissante, menée par une technique personnelle, indécélable.Il chantait cinq, six fois l’air de Longueville, dans la Basoche, chaque fois d’une manière différente. La verve, l’esprit, au service de l’interprétation.
When Lucien fugere took the small role of Schaunard in the French premiere of La Boheme in 1898, Puccini was so delighted with his sparkling performance that he said that he would have liked to be able to expand the role for him. Many other composers shared Puccini’s high esteem of Fugere’s skills as a singing actor and it has been estimated that he took part in at least 30 world premieres amongst which were “Le roi malgre lui” of Chabrier, “La Basoche” and “Fortunio” of Messager, Charpentier’s “Louise” and “Cendrillon” and “Griselidis” of Massenet.Born in 1848, the year of revolutions, Fugere belonged to the first generation of singers to make recordings. He was only five years younger than Adelina Patti, who already sounded like an old lady when she came to make her first records. Fugere’s exceptional vocal longevity was such that he was able to make records by the electrical process in the late 1920s. From the 1870s to the early 1930s Fugere was one on the most popular artists on the Parisian stage. His approach to an operatic career was unconventional by nineteenth century French standards. He did not pass through the hallowed portals of the Paris Conservatoire like most of his colleagues but began his career in the earthy milieu of the Cafe-Concert before venturing into operetta at the Bouffes Parisiens and then appearing at Paris’ second opera house, the Opera-Comique from 1877. Charming photographs of Fugere as the devil in “Griselidis” and as as a benign monk in “le Jongleur de Notre Dame” bear witness to his lively stage presence. Even his very last records, made in extreme old age demonstrate the polished elegance of Fugere’s singing as well as the agreeable timbre of his well-preserved light baritone voice.
