La soprano américaine Maria Curtis Verna a voué la presque totalité de sa carrière au grand répertoire italien. Elle est née, Mary Curtis, le 9 mai 1927, à Salem dans le Massachusetts. Elle commença ses études au Hollis College en Virginie et les completa en Italie avec Ettore Verna avec lequel elle se maria. Elle fit ses débuts sur scène en 1949 au Teatro Lirico de Milan dans le rôle de Desdémone. Elle se produisit dans toute l’Italie sous le nom de Maria Curtis Verna et fut invitée à plusieurs reprises à l’Opéra de Vienne et à l’Opéra de Munich.

Elle fit ses débuts américains à Philadelphie en 1952, la même année à l’Opéra de San Francisco dans Aïda, et en 1954 en Donna Anna au New-York City Opera. Elle entre au Metropolitan Opera en 1957 pour chanter Tosca. Elle y sera Léonore du Trouvère, et de La Force du Destin, Ellizabeth de Don Carlos, Santuzza et Turandot. Elle chanta aussi à Cincinati, Baltimore et au Colon de Buenos Aires.

Elle a enregistré quelques disques pour Cetra : Don Giovanni, avec Taddei, Tajo, Valetti ; Un Ballo in Maschera avec Tagliavini, et Valdengo ; Aïda avec Corelli, Guelfi et Pirazzini.


The American soprano Maria Curtis Verna devoted almost her entire career to the standard Italian repertoire. She was born Mary Curtis on May 9th 1927 at Salem in Massachusetts. She began her studies at Hollis College in Virginia and completed them in Italy with Ettore Verna whom she married. She made her stage debut in 1949 under the name of Maria Curtis and was invited on several occasions to the Vienna Opera and the Munich Opera.

She made her American debut in Philadelphia in 1952 and in the year at the San Francisco Opera as Aida and in 1954 as Donna Anna at the New York City Opera. She arrived at the Metropolitan in 1957 for Tosca. At the Metropolitan she sang the roles of Leonora in Il Trovatore and La Forza del Destino, Elisabeth in Don Carlos, Santuzza and Turandot. She also sang in Cincinati, Baltimore and at the Colon in Buenos Aires.

She made several recordings on the Cetra label. Don Giovanni with Taddei, Tajo, Valletti, Un Ballo in Maschera with Tagliavini and Valdengo and Aida with Corelli, Guelfi and Pirazzini.
