Pol PLANCON
(1854 -1914)
Né à Fumay dans les Ardennes, Pol Plançon étudie le chant avec Duprez et Sbriglia. Il débute à Lyon dans Les Huguenots (Saint-Bris) puis se produit à Monte-Carlo. En 1883, il fait de mémorables débuts à l’Opéra de Paris, dans le Méphisto de Faust qu’en dix ans il y incarnera plus de cent fois, il y fut aussi à tour Saint-Bris et Marcel des Huguenots, Frère Laurent, Le Roi de Lohengrin, Gaspard du Freischütz, Hagen, Sparafucile, Il quitte la France pour l’Angleterre puis les Etats-Unis, où il devient l’une des plus grandes vedettes du Metropolitan Opera. L’étendue de sa tessiture allant de la basse-profonde au baryton, sa virtuosité fabuleuse, faisant de lui une basse colorature qui n’a jamais été égalée, l’élégance de son maintien et ses talents d’acteurs firent de lui, jusqu’à sa retraite en 1908, l’un des artistes les plus adulés de son temps.

Pol Plancon was without doubt the most dazzlingly accomplshed bass to have made records. His smooth legato, his astonishingly rapid and accurate runs and his perfectly turned trill set a standard that has never been matched since by a male voice. One of his party tricks was apparantly to sing the Queen of the Night’s aria in falsetto. What a pity that we have no record of that! There can have been few coloratura sopranos who could have outdone him in sheer vocal velocity. Plancon was born in 1854 and made his debut at Lyons in 1877.

He established himself at the Paris Opera in the 1880s and by 1900 was one of the glories of what came to be regarded as a Golden Age at the Metropolitan in New York and at Covent Garden in London. His records were made towards the end of his career between 1902 and 1908, but even the last ones show remarkably little diminution of his vocal skills.
Amongst his roles were Mephistofeles in the operas of Gounod,Berlioz and Boito, Pogner in Die Meistersinger, the Landgrave in Tannhauser, Frere Laurent, Sarastro, Escamillo, Marcel and St. Bris (in legendary casts of Les Huguenots) Plunkett in Martha and Le Comte de Gormas in the world premiere of Massenet’s Le Cid. After his retirement in 1908, he tought singing in Paris until his death in 1914.
